Below are two case studies that have made a significant difference in the operational function of effective tank storage and preventing energy loss when heating liquids in the storage tanks.
Tank FARMS
The Problem
- Most containment systems with Ldpe or Hdpe liners that require booting around piles or other pipe penetrations typically exhibit signs of stress and failure. These are mainly due to factors from environmental stresses:
- Temperature swings in Western Canada can range from +30oC to -30oC in a short duration;
- Damaging effects of the sun’s UV rays.
- Booting system problems from clamp failures which loosen over time and lead to the boot settling out of position, caulking drying and cracking and butyl tape losing its adhesiveness thereby unraveling.
- The other major factor is physical damage from operations. Unlike the rest of the containment liner which is covered by a thick layer of sand and aggregate – the pile boots are usually left exposed and susceptible to damage from an errant welding project, accidental tool impact or simply the pressure of someone walking too close to it.
- If a leak is ever to occur in the tank farm, the first avenue of escape is the failure at the boots.

Halo’s Solution
Spray applied polyurethane liners.

- These liners require no boots, bolts, clamps, caulking or tape to be applied.
- Simply clean the surface of the pile or pipe, prime and spray coat directly to steel.
- This coating chemically cures into the porous surface of the metal, dries and locks itself into place with a 1200psi bond.
- The bond that is created expands and contracts due to the elastomeric nature of the product which allows for freezing and heating to run its course without any adverse effects on the bond.
- Simply clean the surface of the pile or pipe, prime and spray coat directly to steel.
- The polyurethane is also UV resistant which means it does not weaken with exposure to UV light.
- These liners require no boots, bolts, clamps, caulking or tape to be applied.
- The 90+ durometer rating and very high abrasion resistance to the coating helps to prevent damage from surface operations.
Spray coatings even have the advantage of not requiring any ground cover with sand or aggregate which allows for easy integrity checking throughout the life of the containment area.

Insulated STORAGE TANKS
The Problem
- Foam insulated tanks that have been damaged due to weather, wildlife and other operational damage.
- Rust and corrosion allowed to set into the un-coated un-protected steel tank wall.
- Heat loss and energy inefficiency due to un-insulated section of the tanks.
- Added cost to continuously heat the fluid in the tanks.

Halo’s Solution
- Remove damaged foam, prime the steel and spray foam the area to re-protect the steel and insulate the tank again.
- Placing a primer on the steel also prevents corrosion from setting in and provides longevity to the steel.
